Super Bowl Upset

Patriots lose - Giants win! David versus Goliath or karmic retribution for the whole filming plays scandal? Either way, tonight's game should make for some good watercooler fodder tomorrow.

I have a feeling I'll be staying up late tonight - have been sleeping a lot the past 3 days (worked from home Friday due to the 8 inches of snow coating the winding, hilly path I am required to take to get to work - and had quite the productive time preparing for Best Practice roll out; there's a lot to be said about working in a recliner) and getting way into the first 2 seasons of Breaking Bad on AMC. It's a show about a chemistry teacher that starts cooking drugs. Mr. Jeff and I have been picking apart the episode (props for the cameo appearance by our favorite acid, HF) while he works on his MBA and I blog and window shop for makeup and clothes.

(Seeing the new Clinique spring collection takes me back to February 2005 when I got the spring bloom line and spent the subsequent months adorned with soft shades of peach accented with lime green.)

Other highlights of the weekend included:
- baking a loaf of 9 grain bread that I accented with my own polenta-add in (Sparky bakes her own bread now - yet another reason to love her)
- watching movies (Shoot 'Em Up is incredibly vulgur and wrong...a modern day piece of grindhouse-style cinema and I loved it. btw - Monica Bellucci is gorgeous!)
- taking naps
- quesidillas at Jalepenos
- Mama's chocolate cake
- discovering that the East Peoria Kroger is a nice substitute for my beloved ghetto-Kroger on Sterling

In other news...
Still living in the basement of my parents' house, still happily engaged to Mr. Jeff, still freezing me arse off here in Peoria (though 30 degrees is starting to sound warm). I've been spending my evenings playing volleyball, becoming conversational in Spanish, and learning the basics of heat treating. The science of metallurgy is blowing my mind because I've never thought about phase change diagrams in the sense of the behavior of metal. (I've always thought more gaseous-liquid behaviors...)

And, wow - I just realized this is my first post since October.

Sparky = Living in the Basement of Parents' House

So I'm now 2 for 2 ... first, I said I'd never move back to Illinois. (Hello from Peoria) Second, I said I feared living in the basement of my parents' house. Well, soon I'll be living in the basement of my parents' house.

Here's the deal - folks are moving to Washington, which is just across the river from Peoria. I'm currently paying $xxx for rent plus $yyy for utilities (eff you, Ameren Cilco!) plus $zzz for other living expenses. I'm getting married in a year. Folks are building a sweet-pimp house on Pine Lake Golf Course. (Sparky golfs). So, I've been given the option of moving into their fully finished and quite awesome basement, rent free, until well...whenever. Short of throwing keggers, cooking meth, or other unspeakables, I can do what ever I want, whenever I want, on my own schedule. Of course, being the mild mannered person I am, this shouldn't be a problem.

Seeing my track record for such things, let me state right now for the record, I swear I'll never win the lottery. Never. Not in a million years.

And I'm Back

Woah...what a year and it's only mid-April.

I know you've all been reading, so there's no need to recap. (But for those of you who like those "last time on sparkyworld" intros to a blog entry, just scroll down.) I'm taking tomorrow off because I think I'm going to start the tradition of never working on a Friday the 13th. Or, at the very least, I felt like it'd be nice to have a long weekend with Mr. Jeff, watching movies (Grindhouse, w00!), bowling, mini-golfing, going to a volleyball party, and getting some engagement photos snapped.

So, in honor of the beginning of one of the best weekends ever, 5 things I'm digging this week:

1. Laser Floyd. Mr. Jeff and I went to see Laser Dark Side of the Moon at Lakeside Museum's Planetarium a couple of weekends ago. I've been rocking out to Dark Side and seeing lasers in my head since. Everyone needs to go to see Laser Floyd at least once. Everyone.

2. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black. This album is brilliant. It's the result of a drunken, high one night stand between a hip hop master and a sixties do-wop diva group. They tried her off to rehab, she said no no no. I say get this album, go go go.

3. Target - the number one reason this store is better than WalMart - they don't sell edited music. Oh, and those cute little Proenza Schouler numbers.

4. Striped Stuff - socks, shirts, pants... give me stripes!

5. Tostados Tortilla Chips with Hint of Lime - they're absolutely mesmorizing, which means that I can't keep them in the house. I go into a trance when I eat them and next thing I know, the whole bag is gone!

Last night, I learned that my grandfather, Grandpa!, died after rocking the face off the earth for 90 years.

In tribute, here are 5 facts about Grandpa!

- When Grandpa witnessed the surrender of the Japenese, the emporor of Japan was so overwhelmed by his awesomeness that his head exploded. The US government was so embarassed by this, that they rewrote the history books and had a stand in sign the surrender.

- Grandpa didn't use heavy equipment to dig a gravel pit. He stared at the earth until a hole dug itself.

-In the year 2000, Grandpa had to submit a urine sample. Much to the surprise of the urologist, Grandpa had pissed pure whiskey.

-The city of Springfield, MO asked him to move back to Illinois in 1997 because his extreme coolness was making the town look bad in comparison. To this day, Springfield still suffers from an inferiority complex.

-When Clint Eastwood was filming the Dirty Harry movies, the director would always urge Clint to "be more like Ben VonBurg" in order to accurately portray the epitome of bad assedness.

RIP, Grandpa! I hope you're kicking ass and taking names in Heaven.

Love, Sparky

52 degrees

Woah - it's going to be above freezing tomorrow. And not only that, it'll be well above freezing. I can't wait for the weekend.

How Engaging

Greetings from Aurora, IL! Home of Wayne's World. The thing that strikes me most about this place is how different real Aurora is from Wayne's World Aurora. It's much fancier here than it was in the movie? Or is it fancier here than it was in 1989? I'm not sure.

So I'm staying at a Super 8, which is great because it's across the street from Fox Valley mall, near Chipotle, and has wireless internet. The bathroom has a bright red, infrared light and I feel like old hamburgers whenever I go in there. I'll be showering in the dark tomorrow as to not have the proteins in my eyes cooked by the light. Even if I weren't aware of long wave rays, I wouldn't find the lighting cool. It's disorienting and weird.

Tomorrow I'm touring the wheel loader facility and it shoudl be pretty awesome. I get to one on one with staff up there, get an overview of behavior based safety programs, and drive tractors. I refuse to leave property until I've driven a tractor. I wonder if they'll let me drive tractors off property...all the way back to Peoria.

Leave and book it back to P-town for Volleyball at 7. Must remember my body mechanics to give good service! Bump, set, spike!

Oh, and I got engaged on Friday. I'm going to be Sparky McJeffers. :w00t:

Tundra Time

It's three degrees right now. I've spent the last few hours firmly (and warmly planted) in my chair, watching tv, and e-window shopping on the internet.

In lieu of "California Dreamin'," I'm mentally creating this fabulous, warm new life in my mind. For each site at which I browse, another layer to this fantasy is added. It started with a bathing suit and then flats and sandals. Of course, I'll need a sundress and some shorts and a nice, flowery fragrance to add that sensory accent to my new look to go along with my new life.

By the time I began selecting a pair of sunglasses, I started to think about selecting a new residence at some place where folks think the world is ending when it gets this cold. I think the world is ending, but apparently I'm the only one. And if I'm going to move someplace warm, I need a job. But not just any job, a new career. Biostatician looks pretty cool...epidemiologists. Just something different. I'm just tired of the cold and the usual. And I'm ready for a change.

Until then, I'll keep looking at the fineries and try to figure the logic of mentally creating a sunnier, simpler life by possibly attaining additional things. New shoes, new purse, new life.

Thawing Out

The temperature rose above 32 this weekend, so I got out and about a bit. Here are some of my finds for the weekend:

1. The German Specialties Store on Sheridan. I tried a bit of blood and tongue meat and picked up an aluminum tube of mustard and a pound of german sausage links. After the holiday season, I'm going back and having the lady there make me a sandwich.

2. The Walgreens Cosmetics Counter. I got to try out that Zeno device on a pulsing boil on my cheek. It worked so well, my cheek was smooth and the only evidence of an issue was a pink dot on my cheek. Also check out the eyeliners by Jordana. I picked up 2 kajal kohl liners for $3 and they're better than any liner I've ever obtained from a department store.

3. Borders. Books are 20% off for Christmas. I made a mental note to request some David Sedaris books. Amy Sedaris has a delightful book on entertaining that's worth checking out as well.

4. Central Illinois Ceramics in Creve Couer. Granted, I'm pimping out the place I go to work on projects, but they've just put out some really cute stuff for both painting and purchase. May I recommend the cute little snowballs?

Jawbreaker

I'm getting fitted for a mouthguard next week because I've resumed grinding my teeth in my sleep. As a result, I've been experiencing a bit of jaw pain and have bitten the hell out of my cheeks, which have subsequently become infected.

Ew.

Thanksgiving Weekend Survival: The Supplies

1. A Copy of "Stumbling on Happiness"
2. A sports bottle filled with cranberry juice, vodka, and lime. I call this concoction "HAPPY THANKSGIVING"
3. Another sports bottle filled with a white russian. I call this concoction "coping mechanism."
4. Classic rock cds
5. A cell phone with text messaging capability

...and all of this is just to get me TO Branson in quasi-fine form.

The Bathroom Rant

(Ladies...this is for you.)

When you go into a bathroom, there are certain items that you can't help but assume will always be present. Toilet paper, door on the stall...tampons in the machine. That last one - that may be more of a hope than something that can be safely assumed.

This morning, I was over in E checking out the fume hoods and getting high off the gnarly aromatic compound smell permeating throughout a block of labs when I felt that unmistakeable...feeling that I should excuse myself for (lack of better words) the dam had broken and it was time to go sandbag.

Rushing through the deceptively confusing square that is the building, I found my way back to the restrooms and made a beeline for the machine. At first, I attributed my inability to get the quarters into the machine to my own issues, but then realized that when the machine is out, it's nice enough to plug the money hole. But if the money hole is plugged, the machine is...out. Fortunately, there was another lady in there (and she had a purse with her! And most girls keep in their purses...) and she was able to help me out. Rejoice! All was right with the world - until I left the restroom and then became irritated that there were no feminine supplies to be found in the restrooms. And lately, when I'm irritated with the facility, I call in a work order to have it fixed. (It's easier and more productive than merely complaining.) So I pull out my cell phone and call...

Work Order Desk: May we help you? (Grrr - a dude answered!)
Me: Please dispatch housekeeping to RR1 in E.
Desk: What is the issue?
Me: The lady supply machine needs to be refilled.
Desk: RR1?
Me: RR1.
Desk: All right, we'll send someone over. (Yay!) What is your name? (D'oh!) What is your telephone number? (I'd like to see the customer satisfaction survey on this one.)

So I provided the information and resumed to my morning activity of huffing out of the paint lab fume hood. I didn't think much more of this until later this afternoon when I'm standing in line in the cafeteria and my phone rings.

The conversation went something like this:

Housekeeping: This is housekeeping lady. I understand there's an issue with RR1 in E.
Me: Yes.
Housekeeping: The machine is out, you say?
Me: Yes.
Housekeeping: Which machine?
Me: ...(quietly, keep in mind, I'm in the lunch line with other people standing around) sanitary supplies.
Housekeeping: What is it out of? (You've got to be kidding me!)
Me: Everything.
Housekeeping: So it's the tampon machine?
Me: That is correct.
Housekeeping: No it's not.
Me: Yes it is. I checked earlier.
Housekeeping: Are you sure? I filled one earlier.
Me: Did you fill that one? It's in RR1.
Housekeeping: I'll check.
Me: Thank you. Have a good day. (Hangs up)

*sigh*

A couple of hours later, after I had pretty much forgotten about all of this, I was in the bathroom in my building. I like the one by the vending machines - it's quiet in there and not a high traffic area. After washing my hands, I turned to use the lotion dispenser, which is at shoulder height for me (I'm 5'7") and I depressed the lever so it'd dispense and *squish* a high powered stream of milky liquid shot out, banked off the palm of my hand, and nailed me across the chest. The lotion dispenser money shot me!

So I've spent the remainder of my day walking around with milky white spots all over my dark red shirt.

(And I can't think of a better way to end this entry, so I'll leave you with the mental image of me walking around covered in dried, white goo and my attempts at hiding it as I maneuver through the remainder of my day.)

Top 10 Ways to Neglect a Blog

1. Travel. Go places like Kentucky and Metropolis.
2. Work. A lot. Have a day where you work from 5:30-8:00 and then go back the next morning at 3. On the upside, I got to eat a lot of pizza.
3. Go Celebrate Accolades from Management. Why celebrate the Sparky? See #2.
4. Start reading everything in sight. I like magazines and books on gunfights.
5. Start sleeping at night.
6. Go see movies. May I recommend The Prestige
7. Perform a 5S event on your house. The 5 Ss are: sort...shine...sustain...I forget what the other 2 Ss are. Regardless, it's a weekend of putting things into containers and reducing home inventory. I'll show you my cabinet of organized and quasi-labeled foodstuff. It's rather impressive.
8. Go to a Hockey Game. Watch the Rivermen lose. A lot. (But not lose so badly that we can't redeem our ticket stubs for quarter pounders at McDonalds.)
9. Diet. I lost 6 pounds last week.
10. Home Improvement Projects. I assembled a two-shelf organizer this evening. It now holds shoes and a laundry basket filled with purses. I think I'll go back to Tar-jay and get a few more and some laminated particle board cubes and transform my sliding door, standard issue apartment closet into a California-Closet. And if not in this apartment, where ever I live next...

The Joy that is Happy Hour

Old Chicago has cheap appetizers Monday - Friday from 3:00 - 6:00 pm.

Tonight, Nicole and I partook in chips and queso (go ahead and pronounce it kee-so, everyone else does), pepperoni rolls, and a personal pizza with pepperoni and sausage. Each dish was $2.99! $2.99! World Beer Tour, Deep Pan Pizza, Happy Hour. Old Chicago may just be my preferred place to go in Peoria for unhealthy sustinance.

Obligatory Update

Yes, I'm alive. No, I haven't been eaten by bears.

I don't log on to the computer much in the evenings these days because I do believe my desk monkey ways are cutting into my ability to enjoy recreational computing. Furthermore, reality > virtual reality and aside from having the most awesome boy ever to help occupy my time, the weather has been g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s! That's right g-o-r-e-g-e-o-u-s! (B-a-n-a-n-a-s!)

I'm getting ready to dive right into some big projects at work because if I want to be a , I need to start acting like one. This means I'm about to get up close and personal with efficiency and project management. See, there's more time gone right there. You should all send me messages of support, really - and preferably at gmail.

I'm off for hot cocoa with the world's sexiest engineer and his lackeys. Peace!

They Don't Make Boys Like They Used To, So I'll Just Have to Get an Old School Model

I went on a date today. It was awesome. Here's the highlight reel:

* Being greeted with 3 roses
* Lunch at a locally owned restaurant (you know, one with character)
* Walking around Morton PumpkinFest (amused at strongman competition, an award winning hand carved wooden fish, laughing at how the purpose of holding hands is to clothsline small children)
* A Trip on the spinning, flipping, rotating in a cage wheel ride
* Mini Golf in East Peoria (complete with logarithmic scoring to accomodate my terrible time on the greens)
* Grandview View Drive
* Swinging in the park
* Sharing a turkey sandwich for dinner and sitting on the balcony
* Hours and hours of enjoying each others' company

So now I've officially decided that I've crossed over from amused to smitten.
